X2•Series Instrumentation

Can I use SeaCast for my new instrumentation?

AML's new instruments (AML-1, AML-3, AML-6) can only be used with Sailfish Software.

Do the new instruments require a USB WiFi Adapter like before?

AML Loggers with depth rating to 500m have integrated WiFi communication.

AML selected WiFi because it has greater stability and greater range (up to 100m) than bluetooth. These instruments can connect to any hotspot WiFi available, and/or to an adhoc network via a USB WiFi adaptor, if preferred.

Where can I find a manual for my instrument?

The user manuals for instrument, sensors, and Sailfish software are on the USB sent with all purchases, but they can also be found on the product pages on the website.

What is the bend radius of my cable?

The rule of thumb is the bend radius of a cable is 15 times the diameter of the cable. For example, a 0.25″ diameter cable has a bend radius of 3.75.”

Does the AML-1 and MicroX use the same cable?

Yes, the AML-1 and the MicroX have the same connector and pin-out allowing for the use of any existing MicroX cabling.

How should I care for my connectors?

Correct maintenance prolongs the life of connectors. To facilitate proper care, a small tube of Molykote 44 Medium is provided with each new X2•Series instrument.

  • Apply a layer of Molykote 44 grease to the female half of the connection. Use just enough to cover all of the holes.
  • Press the shorting plug or cable down into the connector and wipe away any excess grease. The connector is now lubricated.
  • Perform this maintenance every week that the instrument is in use.
  • After a connector is cleaned, reapply grease before use.

X2change™ Sensors

How often should sensors be calibrated?

We typically recommend annual calibration, however there is no set rule of thumb. There are many factors at play including usage, care and handling, the deployment environment, and contract requirements to name a few.

A benefit of Xchange sensors is that only the sensor heads need to return to factory for calibration. If you have spare sensors, they can be installed on the instrumentation instead to eliminate downtime.

I have a blue collar SV sensor. Can I use it on my AML-3/X2•Series Instrument?

Blue collar Xchange™ sensors are not compatible with X2•Series instruments. Similarly, an orange collar X2change™ sensor is not compatible with Xchange™ instruments such as BaseX, MinosX, etc.

Will the CT sensor measure salinity and density?

The X2change™ CT sensor outputs the data in two separate columns. To calculate salinity a pressure sensor needs to be installed. With those three parameters, the instrument could then output calculated salinity & density as a byproduct. Since it is not being recorded directly, AML does not produce specifications for the calculated parameters.

At what frequency does AML's Sound Velocity technology transmit?

4Mhz

Moving Vessel Profilers

What are the main benefits of the MVP?

Real time profiling while the survey vessel is in motion provides a host of advantages over periodic, stationary profiling. With the ability to collect multiparameter data and output in real-time, the Moving Vessel Profiler (MVP) can help performance predictability and profitability. Please view the Moving Vessel Profiler page for a more indepth overview.

How many MVP models are there?

There are 4 MVP models: MVP30, MVP30-350, MVP200 and MVP300.

What is the latest version of MVP GUI software?

The latest version is v2.48.

Which versions of MS Windows can the MVP GUI be used with?

Since Microsoft no longer manufactures or supports Windows XP, it is not an option. Windows 7 is recommended.  Depending on the version of MVP software being used, Windows 10 is also compatible.

Technical Support

Why can I not see my logged data?

If having trouble viewing logged data, please try syncing the instruments' date/time in the instrument settings page in Sailfish.

My data is getting removed when importing my log files or when I select Remove out of Range Points in Sailfish.

Please check the Data Filter settings on the Sailfish Settings page. The recommended defaults are: 0 to 90 mS/cm (Conductivity), 0 to 6000 dBar (Pressure), 0 to 6000 metres (Depth), -5 to 45 Celcius (Temperature), 1375 to 1625 m/s (Sound Velocity), 0 to 3000 NTU (Turbidity), 0 to 45 PSU (Salinity) and 1000 to 1200 kg/m3 (Density). If working outside of regular oceanographic conditions, modifications may have to be made accordingly.

My GPS is taking a while to connect.

In the Sailfish Settings, please enable "Offline Assist". When connected to the internet, Sailfish will automatically download GPS assisted data and send it to the connected instrument to reduce the GPS time to first fix.
